Service Learning at UNO

Rewarding Experiences & Benefits

Service learning is an opportunity for students to connect classroom theories to practice and to contribute to their communities through participation in projects developed by faculty in collaboration with community partners. This type of structured engagement allows for the development of reciprocal relationships between the faculty and community partners, and further, UNO and local communities.  It also provides hands-on experiences for students to apply classroom learning in real-world settings, which studies have shown increase comprehension and understanding of skill applicability.

The University of New Orleans provides an academic environment that cultivates leaders who, upon graduation, are ready to lead and are excited to remain engaged in the communities where they live and work.  The Service Learning program at UNO was established through a generous grant from the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation.  Efforts to expand continue through the ongoing work to identify new community partners and to support all UNO affiliates interested in becoming involved in service learning.

Service Learning at UNO

Through Service Learning, the Office of Experiential Learning and Community Engagement supports the University of New Orleans’ commitment to developing student knowledge while serving the region, the nation, and the world at-large as it connects community engagement to the university curriculum.

Incoming freshmen and current students can enhance their studies at UNO through community service. Also, visiting students from other universities can spend a semester in New Orleans doing something truly significant through service learning at UNO. small-text
