LaSPACE Support for Advanced Flight Opportunities for Students (SAFOS) Program
 

***FOR Louisiana COLLEGE STUDENTS***

The SAFOS program aims to encourage student participation in aerospace research by providing funds for the development of student satellite payloads and other space-engineering products. SAFOS was developed with several established advanced flight programs in mind. Advanced flight projects offer student scientists and engineers a real-world technical and project management experience, which contributes to a skilled technical workforce for the aerospace industry. Funds from SAFOS may be used to support student teams participating in programs like HASP, RockSat-C, and RockSat-X. Other advanced flight programs that emphasize a complete project lifecycle, from design to build through flight and post-flight analysis, are eligible.


Interdisciplinary Research Experiences in Louisiana’s Changing Coastal Environments
Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON), Chauvin, LA

REU participants will spend ten weeks (June 1st – August 7th) at LUMCON conducting independent research projects with guidance from scientific mentors / mentor teams and participate in a series of career and skill-building workshops and activities while interacting with peers participating in other aspects of LUMCON’s summer programs. Each student is paired with a scientific mentor(s) based on mutual research interests. The REU program is designed to give students a meaningful, hands-on research experience that takes advantage of state-of-the-art methods and technologies available at LUMCON. This summer, mentors are interested in supporting interns to conduct research in a number of topic areas, including: ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, habitat forming species, phytoplankton ecology, marine plant physiological ecology, behavioral ecology, sea level rise, marsh and estuarine biodiversity, disturbance ecology, dissolved oxygen dynamics, wetland science, bioimaging and fluid mechanics, restoration science, and biodiversity information science.

The Scientists in Parks work experience program supports the management of natural resources by funding interdisciplinary projects in the biological sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, communications & education. Participation provides a real-world opportunity to gain valuable work experience while exploring career options in science and land management. Successful participants will enjoy opportunities to learn new skills, network with career professionals, and contribute meaningfully to the protection of America’s most beloved places. In addition, many Scientists in Parks projects afford outstanding opportunities for mentorship and leadership development.

Since 1992, HACU has offered one of the best internship programs in the country. Interns gain invaluable professional experience within a federal agency, while getting paid!  Interns can be fall, spring or summer, with virtual, hybrid and in-person formats.  Your institution does not have to be a member of HACU, in order for you to apply. Grants in Aid of Research Program
Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Honor Society

Application Deadline: March 15; October 1

The Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from most areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.


Science, Technology, and Policy Program
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Science, Technology and Policy Program is designed to provide opportunities to participate in programs, projects, and activities at the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM). The STP Program provides an opportunity for highly talented scientists and engineers to participate in technical and policy-related FECM projects. FECM will provide a supplemental stipend to offset the costs of health insurance. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance plans offered through ORISE. Participants may receive an allowance for education and/or scientific activities as approved by FECM. The initial appointment can be for one year or less, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FECM contingent on the availability of funds up to 4 additional years. The appointment can be made on a full-time or part-time basis.

National Science Foundation

Every year, approximately 200,000 men and women leave U.S. military service and return to civilian life. NSF is committed to making sure that our nation’s veterans have pathways into STEM education and careers. The Supporting Veterans in STEM Careers Act, signed into law in 2020, directs NSF to "encourage veterans to study and pursue careers in STEM and computer science". As such, NSF offers several programs and initiatives to help veterans transition into a science and engineering career. As of a review in June 2020, there were 275 NSF-funded projects, in more than 100 programs across all directorates, that feature veterans. Linked are just some of the resources for veterans wishing to enter a STEM career.

The Center offers a wide range of part-time internship opportunities to current, recent, or returning college students. Wilson Center interns have the opportunity to develop both research and professional skills, and to participate in the numerous activities and events held at the Center. There are at least 80-90 interns at the Center at any given time. Availability of positions generally corresponds to the beginning of the fall, spring, and summer terms. Most internships are unpaid. The Wilson Center has two different internship programs (Research Assistant internships and Staff Assistant internships) with separate applications and deadlines.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)
U.S. Dept. of Energy, Office of Science

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students and recent graduates to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission. Applications for the SULI program are solicited annually for three separate internship terms. Internship appointments are 10 weeks in duration for the Summer Term (May through August) or 16 weeks in duration for the Fall (August through December) and Spring (January through May) Terms. Each DOE laboratory/facility offers different research opportunities; not all DOE laboratories/facilities offer internships during the Fall and Spring Terms.

Foundation for Defense of Democracies

Based in downtown Washington, D.C., the Foundation for Defense of Democracies has a number of internship opportunities available during the spring, fall and summer semesters. All FDD interns will have the opportunity to participate in a twice-monthly speaker series, which brings high-level DC officials and senior staff members to engage with interns in an intimate setting. FDD interns will be encouraged to build on their academic skills by working closely with senior staff. FDD is also happy to assist students who wish to earn academic credit for this internship. 50 Word Fiction Prize
Scottish Book Trust

Application Deadline: Monthly

Can you write a story in just 50 words? We’ll provide a prompt to get you started, but where the story goes from there is entirely up to you. Entrants must write a piece of short fiction based on the prompt provided. Entrants may submit only one entry. Entries should be close to but no more than 50 words. The prize consists of one mug from The Literary Gift Company for the all-age category, a notebook for teen winners, a selection of books for the young writers category and books for the Gaelic category.

Fish Publishing runs four annual International Writing Contests: Short Story, Short Memoir, Flash Fiction, and Poetry. Renowned poets and writers select ten from each contest for publication in the Annual Fish Anthology. Fish endeavours to publish outstanding new writers and poets.
