Undergraduate Program

Bachelor of Arts in Film and Theatre

From faculty to students, we are filmmakers and theatre makers. As a filmmaker you will have a camera in your hands during the 1st year of school, and you will have the opportunity to work on as many productions as you have time for. Our thriving graduate film program produces multiple short films every semester, and undergrads are encouraged to participate as cast and crew. We have one of the most technologically advanced film programs in the country, with 4K digital cameras, a full complement of lighting gear, a grip truck, 4K digital post-production editing, high-end audio and color correction suites, and a fully-equipped soundstage. Our program isn’t just theoretical, it’s practical!

The theatre program offers an in-depth, liberal arts experience as it trains students in the disciplines of acting, directing, and design. We strive to foster creativity, imagination and investigative thinking, as we prepare students to enter today’s multi-faceted performing arts markets. Our courses combine experiential learning with theoretical studies. Award winning faculty challenge students by exploring a wide range of theory and technique both through studio and publicly presented productions. We offer professional level training for students to enter and thrive as relevant theatre makers.

The Department of Film and Theatre houses a Bachelor of Arts degree where students can choose from two courses for study: Film Arts or Theatre Arts. The Bachelor of Arts Degree is a four-year/120 credit hour degree designed to prepare students for entry in to the fields of film, theatre and creative writing, and as a foundation for future graduate study.

Course of Study

Film Arts

Breaking in to the film industry isn’t easy. Jobs are competitive. Films are selective. And typically productions arefar and few between. Not here in New Orleans, and not for our students at UNO. We live in a film making hub, and we get our students out there working! We have multiple paid and for-credit internship opportunities during the school year. We work with incoming Hollywood productions to get our students shadowing professionals. Many students transition from those internships into full-time employment opportunities.

Theatre Arts

UNO is committed to maintaining a wide range of plays, and exposing you to a wide variety of dramatic literature and production styles. Theatre UNO has been a major contributor to the live performance landscape that has grown in the New Orleans area. Our graduates have worked in every major venue of the city having been instrumental in starting several of these award winning theatre companies.
